Dollies vs Hand Trucks: Which is Better For Your Business?

If you own a business and need to move heavy objects, you may be interested in hand trucks or dollies. Both of these can make your life easier and help you complete your tasks without any difficulty. But which one suits your business?

Dollies:

Dollies are flat platforms that have wheels underneath them. They come with handles so that individuals can pull them along while also pushing the dolly from the front to get it moving faster.

They are designed to carry just about anything from small boxes to heavy appliances. They may even be large enough for an individual to stand on while using them in some cases!

Why choose them?

Many people prefer this tool because it has a broad base, so it won’t tip over easily and can hold a lot of weight.

If you choose to use one, you will probably need at least two people: someone on the platform and another person at the front to push or pull, depending on how you want it to go.

These tools are suitable for individuals who work with furniture and appliances because they can easily lift them onto dollies so that they don’t strain their backs or legs as they carry them into different rooms.

Businesses such as warehouses also often use these items since companies sell different boxes in bulk, and having this tool is beneficial when loading large amounts of pallets onto trucks during transportation.

Hand Trucks:

A hand truck is slightly different than a dollie because it has three wheels, two in front and one at the back. It is typically used by one person instead of multiple.

This is because it has a handle that extends up to 2 feet off the ground for you to grab on to while walking behind it. This way, you won’t have to bend over as much when transporting items to different rooms or onto trucks.

Why choose them?

Hand trucks are also great because they can fit into smaller places than other tools such as dollies or pallet jacks, so if you work in an area that doesn’t allow for larger equipment, this may be what you need.

These items are best suited for individuals who will be moving boxes often without needing too many people around to help lift them. This way, employees can focus on doing their tasks independently without asking for assistance.

These are also a good choice for warehouses since businesses that sell in bulk tend to have a lot of items that need to be transported, but they don’t have large spaces with high ceilings so that dollies won’t fit well.

What is Better?

The answer depends on what your company specializes in and how big or small it is.

Try asking yourself these questions:

  • What is the weight of this load?
  • How heavy or bulky is it?
  • Will I have to transport it over long distances?
  • Am I transporting this to different locations throughout the day?
  • Do I have many extra employees to do the movement?

If your answers are less than 150 pounds, no more than 50 feet at a time across level surfaces, you don’t have extra employees to spare, and you’ll only be doing one-way transportation with an occasional return trip, then using hand trucks to transport may be fine for you.

On the other hand, if there’s any chance that you might need to move heavier items further distances at once or if there are sharp turns along the way where carts might get damaged, then it’s best to invest in dollies for your business.
